From the high tides of Devon and the rolling hills of Somerset, to the luscious Welsh countryside and the highlands of Scotland, being prepared for drastic weather changes is just a part of being in Britain, no matter the area.
Here at Pennard Hill Farm, we’re used to the ever changing weather but we want to make sure you are too, so we’re going to list out the ultimate travel essentials to pack when holidaying in the UK.
Weather app
While holidaying in the UK, your best friend will become your preferred weather app or website. Checking once in the morning and once in the afternoon will help you prepare for the day ahead without any surprises. Being ready with the correct attire will keep your day from being spoiled, allowing you to carry on even if the weather turns wet!
Picnic Hamper
A picnic is a fantastic way to try the local food and see the wonderful sites. Buy some delicious sandwiches, meals, desserts and drinks from the locals (we recommend homemade produce), pack them up in your picnic basket and find a stunning view to have the best and easiest lunch date. Make sure to not forget the cutlery, plates, napkins and cups!
Waterproof jackets
With the weather notoriously unpredictable, we strongly recommend being prepared and bringing a waterproof jacket or a windbreaker, even in the heights of summer!
Portable barbecue
Cooking up a campfire feast has never been easier with portable stoves, grills and barbecues. Bring them along with you to the campsite or beach along with your favourite foods and cook up a storm. It’s always a hit!
Correct footwear
It’s crucial to bring the best footwear for the occasion possible. You don’t want to be out hiking in the hills when suddenly it rains and your favourite trainers get covered in mud, out in Wellington boots in 40 degree heat or caught in unexpected snow in flip flops.
Outdoor Activities
Keep yourselves and the family entertained with a variety of outdoor activities that you can play on the campsite, beach and parks ranging from volleyball, frisbee, rounders, rugby, giant hopscotch, mini golf and so much more! Be sure to search online for outdoor travel activities to keep the little ones occupied if you don’t already have some.
Indoor Games
Never underestimate the joys of a card game, jigsaw, scrabble or the ever competitive monopoly whilst enjoying a staycation. They’re the perfect way to step away from technology and enjoy some time together.
Suncream
Sunscreen in the UK? We hear you say… Although not necessarily the sunniest of destinations the UK does have its days, and even during those days where the sun isn’t fully beating down it’s recommended you keep yourself protected with SPF from those UV rays.
Camping equipment
If you’re planning on camping in the lushious countryside that the UK has to offer, it’s best to know in advance what the weather will be like, so you can prepare accordingly. During the winter and autumn seasons, it can get quite chilly at night, so being prepared by having everything you need is a good start to the best night’s sleep. Some of the essentials are:
- Tent
- Sleeping bag or air mattress
- Portable heater
- Blankets
- Portable stove and cooking utensils
- Torches and lanterns
- Foldable chairs
